While Cosmeston lake is still unavailable due to the outbreak of Avian Flu in the surrounding area, we have put together a programme of weekly sessions on different sections of the Taff and at CIWW. Confirmed locations are Pontypridd - Ynysangharad Park, Sophia Gardens and Radyr Weir, we'll rotate through these on a three-weekly basis, starting from May 17th. Detailed location and trip descriptions can be found on the forum; we will add separate posts for each weekly meet. Please sign up on those posts if you're planning to attend. Where - River Taff - Pontypridd - Ynysangharad Park When - Tuesday 7th of June. On the water for 7pm, meeting from around 6:40pm. On the water until around 8pm, possibly 8:30pm if the weather is warm. What - This is a short section of slow-moving water that is suitable for all members who have completed a beginners session and feel confident having their first go on moving water. Please note, that the first 450m section has very limited access to exit the river and paddlers will need to paddle through 3 (very) small rapids before being able to get out. Other weekly sessions will take place on entirely flat water. We have limited capacity to move club kayaks. If you have a roof rack and can help, please let us know. We may need to close bookings for this session if we reach the limit to how many boats we can move. More information is available on the attached river guide. Remember, at this time of year, the water temperature is still low, despite the recent warm weather. Please dress appropriately. If you wish to attend this session, please enter the names of all members below including whether you need any equipment and whether you are able to transport equipment yourself.

Where - River Taff - Cardiff - Radyr Weir When - Tuesday 31st of May. On the water for 7pm, meeting from around 6:40pm. On the water until around 8pm, possibly 8:30pm if the weather is warm. What - For around 1 mile upstream, the weir creates a still and flat section of river where we can paddle upstream, under the M4 and up towards Castle Coch. This is suitable for kayaks, canoes and paddle boards and gives very easy paddling conditions. The 100m below the weir include a little bit of moving water with some calm sections (eddies) either side. This gives a great opportunity for some introduction to moving water for those who have not done it before. There are some sections of the weir that, in the right conditions, can be paddled down. These are basically concrete slides which if the conditions are right can be shot by those with limited experience. At the bottom of the weir there may also be some small surf waves for the more adventurous We have limited capacity to move club kayaks. If you have a roof rack and can help, please let us know. We may need to close bookings for this session if we reach the limit to how many boats we can move. More information is available on the attached river guide. We’re introducing one of our new local moving water sections to give our members the chance to see more of one of our local river Taff. Instead of our usual session at Cosmeston, we will meet and paddle on the Taff at Sophia Gardens. Where - River Taff - Cardiff - Sophia Gardens When - Tuesday 24th of May. On the water for 7pm, meeting from around 6:40pm. On the water until around 8pm, possibly 8:30pm if the weather is warm. What - This section of the river Taff includes unclassified and grade 1 water for around 300m upstream and can be paddled down to Cardiff Bay. The first 750m downstream are free from any other river traffic, however beyond this paddlers should be aware of the potential for other river traffic such as motorboats. While Cosmeston lake is unavailable due to the outbreak of Avian Flu in the surrounding area, we plan to continue to use the main tank of the international pool for the adult session between 9pm to 10pm from the 5th of April 2022 onwards. Unfortunately the 8pm to 9pm pool slot isn't available from April to run our normal junior session, but we have booked access to the flat water pool at CIWW from the 19th of April for 6 weeks on a trial basis. We are currently working through the logistics of this, but the session will take place between 6pm and 8pm each Tuesday. The session will last approx 45 minutes with time before and after to pick up boats and get changed. We are limited to 12 places so will need to operate a booking system. In the meantime, juniors are welcome to attend the 9pm session at the pool for the next two weeks until we start at CIWW, but we recognise the timing of these sessions might be too late for some. If you have any questions, please get in touch and look out for further information on how to book places at the upcoming junior sessions at CIWW in the next couple of weeks.
